What's the best way to ensure the stator is working properly on these vintage outboards? there is no regulator so it doesnt follow conventional voltage patterns.

I'd like to think there is a quick and easy verification it is charging. My manual has been ordered however it's still a few days out.

As always thank you to everyone that helps us newbies!

It has a rectifier and you should see a couple of volts higher reading on battery when started. It only has about a 9 amp output at WOT...

I only see 6 volts ac on the rectifier itself and on the battery as I rev up the engine slowly the voltage will trickle up by a tenth of a volt or 2 however it's not seaworthy yet so I cant hold at high revs to test. Do they degrade or do they just work or not?

Sorry I ment to state in my last post that the 6 VAC was on the Stator itself... not the rectifier.

Unhook the stator from the rectifier and test across the yellow wires.
In other words take the rectifier out of the circuit.
I suspect that the rectifier is shorted (bad).
Test across the yellow wires...not from each one to ground.
Stator should read 13 or more VAC...Alternating current.

Rectifier is a $24 part from Teleflex through Amazon or wherever you choose.

A replacement rectifier can be had for <$10 at RadioShack, if yours is bad. Get the 25A bridge rectifier.

Re: 1976 Merc 1500 how to test stator is functioning properly

Thanks to Luckymann77 and Chris1956 for your responses. I was told before that I should not run this engine without a battery connected or it will damage the stator or the rectifier. So I dont feel I can follow the direction of Luckymann77. Is there a different way to test? I ohmed out this stator and compared to a new one and they ohmed the same which is usually a good indication it is good.

I followed the test for the rectifier found elsewhere in these posts and it tested good according to the procedure suggested and with my history in electrical I would concur it to be correct. I have not purchased the rectifier from RadioShack as yet however I will if nothing else to have as stand by.

Thanks again!

Rob
