Hello everyone, so I have a 1976 Johnson 9.9. It was given to me by my FIL. He used it on a 14ft aluminum boat for years and then upgraded. This motor sat in his garage for about 8 years before he gave it to me. When I got it I rebuilt the carb, put new coils, new plugs and checked compression. Compression was 118 and 120. The motor runs fine in a test barrel, starts on 2/3rd pull every time. Every time I launch my boat and start it up it will idle, but when I put it in gear it gets real sloppy, almost like a misfire and when I throttle it, it does nothing. Will not Rev up at all, took it home, went over everything I did and all seems well. Back in test barrel and it seems good to go, back to lake. Same issue I kept messing with the throttle and got up to about 3mph (14ft aluminum V hull with me and my dog) went about 200 yards and it sputtered and tried to rev higher but then died. Got it started and back to the trailer. Just went out and started it, it revs right up. It just seems like when it’s under load it won’t do anything. Just sits at idle speed, any help or direction to look is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Check the high speed jet (orifice plug) in the carburetor.. Dirty? Oversize/reamed out? Missing?

Sound like it runs at only one cylinder.
Does it jump a spark with at least 5/16 in gap in atmosphere?
Clean the carb and set the low speed needle at 1,5 turn out from lightly seated.

If it sat for 8 years and you did not clean and reset the points then it is most likely running on one cylinder and you are lucky to be getting the one.

Right now that is just a guess so do a cylinder drop test in the barrel. Start it up and let it get warm. Bring it to a fast idle and with a pair of insulated plyers pull one spark plug boot at a time. It should run on one cylinder so if the motor dies when you pull a boot then you know that the other cylinder was never firing and/or is very weak.

The other way to confirm my suspicion is to do a proper external spark test. Remove both spark plugs and using an external spark tester confirm you are getting a spark that can jump a 3/8" gap for both cylinders.

and... being no young chicken... the electricals may need a look into if sparks are weak...could be a bad condenser to !

lots of things can go wrong

Thats the wrong ignition system. OP has the low tension magneto with external coils
