HI! I have been using this forum for reference for a few months, but decided I had to join to try and get my question answered. I have already received so much help here I can't put a value on it! So this is my case:
1976 Evinrude, 70 HP. I have some parts from an identical Johnson I was able to get in great condition. These engines have sat for many years, but I enjoy projects. I have rebuilt the carbs, fuel pump, and added new fuel lines and champion plugs. I pulled the cover to inspect the cylinders, they are as smooth as can be. Compression on all three cylinders is 119-115 now. I use good fuel and conditioner. I took the boat out (15' Chaparral) and it bogged down and cut off while accelerating. If I pressed the choke while shifting I could get it to run 8 miles per hour. I could not figure out why, so I switched the power pack with one I had. I took the boat out again and it ran like it was brand new. The shifter was smooth through the whole range. 32 miles per hour. I did some fishing, moved around the lake, and after about four hours the problem was back. I read about shorts blowing the power pack, so I tested my ignition switch and found a small amount of current in the black/yellow kill wire. I replaced the switch, and ran a new wire to replace the black/yellow. I also got a "DVA Adapter" to test. I got 330 volts from the brown/orange to brown, but only a reading of 8 going to the coils. Ohms read good on everything. I ordered a new power pack, and it did not fix the problem. The readings are the same. Could something blow the pack as soon as it goes on? Is it possible the pack arrived bad? Can my auto-parts digital meter use the DVA properly (from ESI) for the coil wires, or is the 8 a real reading on the discharge side? One other note - it looks like exhaust comes out of the two water holes on the back. These usually spray a little water, then shoot water when running wide open. When I start the engine, I get exhaust out both, then after a few seconds it looks like water spray put one, and exhaust out the other. Is there a leak in the foot causing back-pressure?
