I have a 1976 evinrude 85hp 85693g outboard on a 1986 glasstream bass boat. One said it was like the motor wanted to jump off the boat when shifting to forward. One hint was to shift quickly to forward which did help a bit. Well my boy took the boat out this weekend and the shifter locked in forward. I imagine its like a clutch but I don't know where to start looking , in the lower unit or the foot? and maybe what this might cost to fix? New here and Thank you for such a neat fourm.

Disconnect the shift cable from the engine and try shifting the engine manually and see if the problem is in the control box or the lower unit. See if the control box moves the cable properly.

All the shaking might be a bad motor mount. The engine sits on rubber grommets. Check and make sure they are all tight at the base of the engine inside the cowling. I would disconnect the shift cable at the engine and see if the engine shifts easily by hand. If it does you have a bad cable if it doesn't then you will end up dropping the lower unit. When was the last time you check the gear case lube? Oops. I see that Daviet types faster than me!

Dumb question I know, but did you ever check your prop or prop shaft for being bent ??
