I just bought a boat first time boat owner i know nothing about boats figured gotta learn sometime. Well Here is my first problem boat cranks over good first time turn the key i have not launch into the water just yet still using waterhose plug but i noticed that water was no being return from the top i dont know much or how it works but i do know water goes in threw the bottom pressure pulls it up then back out to cool the engine water is leaking at the lower unit seam where it attaches is this just a blown gasket??

Ok i think i misunder stood some. The problem i am having again i'm a new boat owner so the terminology might not make alot of sense so bare with me
in order to start the motor if i'm land i need some way of injecting water down at the bottom so that i'm not overheating the engine is that not correct i've seen on alot of motors how the water shoots out within seconds of cranking it over to indicate you have a good water pump or that its working correctly with this motor it just dripping out slowing and seems like its leaking from the lower unit what do you think. Could it be lost of pressure gasket blown?

1976 has a port on the back of the leg, this is the exhaust relief port, you should get some droplets of water out of it. also on the starboard rear of the lower cowl there should be a small port water should come out of there. kritters like to clog this hose. leak a joint is normal.

I'm not following your post, exactly. Water will go out through the center of the prop. It's normal to leak at the seam of the lower unit. It's usually under the water, so maintaining a water seal there isn't important.

Are you talking about the engine running, or just cranking over?

Let's get the model number first so we know what year you have - it's not a 1976 motor if it is 140HP.

Anyway, water is expected to drain at the seam between the midsection and gearcase unless it has been sealed (which is not required).

What you're also describing as a place water comes shooting out of from the top is called a tell-tale, or overboard water indicator. OMC started putting those on motors in '78. If yours is older, it doesn't have one.

To run the engine on the garden hose in the driveway, you need a set of "muffs." They are around $5 and can be purchased at any marine store. These muffs will adapt the garden hose to cover the water intake holes on the lower unit. Once you get the muffs on and water going, you can run it all day on the hose.

A E140TLCO should be a 1985. The last two letters indicate the model year
C=8 O=5.

That number should also be stamped on rear of engine block on a small round plug, on my 87 140 I also found it there and on engine bracket.

Alright thanks alot the more and more time i spend on this site i feel more compfortable about owning a boat don't really have alot of outside help so asking someone who works for a boat shop or marine i always gets the feelings they smell blood and ready to tell me anything i need to hear to make a buck.
