I was given a 1976 6hp Chrysler/Force 2 stroke for a backup/trolling motor on my 1976 Bayliner Liberty. The gentleman said he couldn't get it to run but for a couple seconds.

After I got it back to the shop, I looked tried starting it and he was right. Pulled the flywheel and found he set the points gap to .002 instead of .020.

Cannot pull start it. Had to use a drill to get it to run. Haven't checked the carburetor yet. No water coming out of exhaust, will have to check the impeller. The spark plug gap tool is coming in a few days.

Looking up parts on the internet are very hard to find for this year. Any suggestions where to get a parts catalog and a service manual? The model number is a 63HH.

Is there other motors that share the parts from this vintage? Does someone have a cheat sheet on that or other helpful things?
Thanks

Just looked on marinengine.com for 1976 6HP (63HH).....they have the impeller, housing, and other parts in stock. For parts NLA use their part numbers and look on ebay. Also, Crowley marine, boats.net, Franz marine, MasterTech, etc....
Look on ebay for a factory service manual. Would avoid Clymer and Seloc.

Thanks topgun.
Have you or anyone else found manuals online? What are the best/most helpful shop or owner manual companies? I see generic manuals for long range dates, like 1966-xxxx. Is there such things as manuals that are year specific?

The best SHOP manuals are the ones published by the engine manufacturer. An OWNERS manual will have little if any useful info for doing repairs.
The generic manuals, like Clymer and Seloc try to cover too many models/years and leave a lot to be desired. Ebay is a good source for used factory manuals in decent condition. Just make sure you don't get an owners manual or a parts manual.....read the description carefully. There may be downloadable manuals available, but you will still have to pay for them due to copyright issues.

The factory manuals are year specific. If you can't find one for a 1976, you may be able to use one for a 1975 or 1977....maybe @jerryjerry05 or somebody could verify what years would be good to use for your 1976 if you can't find one.
