Just aquired this motor. 1st time mounting one and connecting all the cables/wires etc. Also picked up the Seloc manual just in case. Took her out for her maiden voyage today. She ran fine in the yard with the hose, and she ran fine leaving the ramp. Opened up nicely ran for a short while 1-2 minutes, then died. Finally got her cranked back up by using the choke and having the warm up lever all the way up. Threw her into gear and got her going (after dying a few more times). She wouldn't run much faster than an idle, but she got me back to the dock with no more problems.

It seems like a gas problem. But I don't understand why the choke would be necessary after running for awhile. The gas is good, but I did notice the seal around the nipple on the tank seemed to be allowing air in. COuld it be as easy as this, or does this sound like something else? Thanks for the help.

Was your vent open on the fuel tank?

Re: 1976 85 V4 Sea Horse

Choke required tells me plugged fuel system. did you run this with any old gas in tank?????
Are tank and lines/fittings new. Fuel pump diaphram my be hard if it has set for awhile.
Try pumping fuel bulb while someone else (trusted) is driving the boat. this vintage of engine requires a VENT in the tank, as it has the diaphram type pump on the engine.
All in all, it sounds like fuel restriction, or another fuel related problem.
If it was just doing this at idle, I'd say you need to do a link-n-sinc-which later may be required, but at this point, it sounds like fuel starvation.
Try pumping the bulb first....... :)
p.s. Welcome to the board!! :) :)

I didn't get posted quick enough, but again, as stated above, make sure the vent is OPEN... :)

Re: 1976 85 V4 Sea Horse

Thanks for the reply guys. I was by myself, so the bulb pumping is a great idea. It might be bad gas, but I would have thought it would cut out at idle too.

I will make sure the vent is open, I do not think that it was, but I know the gasket was allowing air in the tank (maybe not enough).

Thanks again. Glad to be aboard.

BTW -- Where is the indicator (pee hole) on this model? Definitly not what I am used to.

Just checked the vent was not open. But I will check the fuel pump diaphram as well.

Don't forget new waterpump, tstats, & change the gear oil as a minimum for a new "old" motor.

Thanks for all the help. I ended up taking her to a mechanic to "tune up" and diagnose the afore mentioned problem. Turns out along with bad gas, I had to have a new power pack. AT least now I know and hopefully won't get stranded again.
