1976 70 hp Evinrude will not shift in to forward or reverse

My 1976 70 hp Evinrude does not shift into forward or reverse when the shifter is moved. Engine runs fine. Was coming into dock, shifted ti neutral and then tried to go forward. Thanks for any help.

Have you checked to see if the shift linkage going to the lower unit is moving?

Also check your shift cable for being broke.

Is this electric shift?

The last mtrs to use electric shift were the 1972 models.
