I hijacked a thread on gel coating, so I started this one. I have a 75 sidewinder jet boat. She was red and silver flaked. Clear is gone flake I assume is aluminum because it is all silver. What is the process to return it to the bass boat look? I tried a clear gel with polyflake and coated it with gel/duratec mix. It did not end well. I thought it was the 2.5 tip gun. Was going to retry with a 4.5 gun but have several progects running now. here are the pics

Any help appreciated. It will be a while before I do this.

Do you really want the flake look on this ?

If it were mine..I would put that baby on the Wow when you fuel up m8..

No gel flake IMO...

Prep/prime that up...and put some sweet 2 part paint on that ( Imron/Awlgrip/Awlcraft2000 )

Berk + double exhaust = fun :) .. Dont..I repeat dont put some crap crap paint on there .. PLEASE !!

YD.

This is probably this your best bet on a good result, not that it can't be done in flake, but its not easy to do.

Yes I read the link and saved it. Thank you ondarvar. I really want the flake look back. When I got her twenty plus years ago she had flake and looked ok. I got stupid and sprayed it with nitrous 150 shot one summer and all was well. Got greedy and hit the olds with 250 and it spark knocked immediately. If you have ever run the gas you know it is to late when you hear it. I want her back like she was. If I cant do it well I guess its paint time. I already have 5 lbs red polyflake. The seat pictured is where I tried it once. Im asking what is the correct way.

The link gives you tips sizes, ratios, methods, etc, the rest is just practice.

Base color, flake layer, then just clear, after that start sanding.

One thing you run into is the over all thickness of the gel coat, since its a flake finish to start with, the gel coat is already on the thick side, adding another complete flake job will make it that much thicker, which may lead to cracking over time.

Skip the Duratec, its not really going to help much, but may cause it to age much quicker.

Depending on the exact products you end up using you'll have more questions, so when you start mixing and doing some test sprays you'll have more specific questions.

Thanks man. It was a long time ago that I shot that seat. I do not remember much except the gun stopped up quick with the flake. Might order some more and retry when it is warmer. On a side note I mixed some ployflake and polyurethane clear and shot the other seat. It has held well but these parts are just sitting and not in use. Is the polyurethane paints comparable to the ones YD mentioned? Why or why not? I am only familiar with automotive paint and Imron which I thought was a poly but I have not shot that stuff since the mid 90s.

Will a standard urethane bc/cc system survive on a boat not left in the water? Would it be better to do the lower hull in a solid gel and then paint the top? Major concern is trailer and lake rash.

OMG that looked awesome. That is the silver I want for my trim. I really would like her back like she was but I am having second thoughts about it. Do you have contact info for him? I still wonder how much flake and gel I would need for a 18 foot boat.

Nice looking hull, there is a guy who has sidewinder with a merc on it on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylOxL-VtUhM
I used a DuPont, base clear urethane on mine, still looks awesome after a season on the lake. It is a metallic, but smaller automotive flake. House of Kolor also makes some larger flake that I considered on my boat.
http://www.houseofkolor.com/speedshapes/speedshapes_pearls.jsp I haven't used it but the guys at the paint store said it takes a lot of clear to get it smooth. Apparently you shoot a solid paint color for the base, then mix the flake in clear and spray it on. After that you build up the clear till you have a smooth finish.
