Hi all! Long time no post! :D

Just looking for a little clarification. Just read through a bunch of posts on this topic and am a little unsure. Can the impeller be accessed with the outdrive still on the boat by removing the lower section and pulling it out from the bottom of the upper? It seems like it can, but my manual (Glenns) only shows it with the outdrive off and dissasembling the upper gearcase.
Thanks for your time!

Yeah, you could work on it like that. Most people once they've gone that far, realize that by removing another 8 small bolts (water deflectors) and 4 trunnion cap bolts and they can put it on the work bench and work on it easier.
You wanna change the water deflector o-rings anyways.

I have the same Year Outdrive. The OEM Manual indicates removal of the Drive. I am in the process of replacing my Impeller now. I will say this, although you might be able to do it by removing the Lower Unit, I see it as a bigger hassle. Removing the Drive is quite easy to me by comparison. In addition, the reason while I am still in the process of replacing the Impeller is because of poor maintenance on the Outdrive in years past. The four big bolts were hard to get out, the impeller housing required downward pressure via Hammer and Screwdriver because of Corrosion and the Upper and Lower Drive Shafts will require a Slide Hammer to seperate because of Spline Grease either dried solid or missing. If your Drive has lacked any kind of maintenance in the past, I strongly recommend removal of the Outdrive, the removal of the Upper Gearcase. At point accessing the Impeller Assembly will be right there. In My Non-Professional Humble Opinion (IMNPHO)

Thanks for the input.

Lyndy: My boat sat for about 12 yrs in a shed before I got it (search my posts from last season for the whole sortid story. :D ) It worked fine for about 18-20 hours run time last summer, but I was allways a little nervous about that old impeller. Had a kicker as backup, just don't want to have to use it. :D After reading about the joys you've been having, I think I will just pull the drive after all.
