Hello all, I recently bought my first boat. Its a 1975 K Kraft with a mercury 500 50hp motor . The problem is that when i try to start it it will only run for about 10-15 sec then it shuts off, and it will only run that long if I push the timing lever all the way forward. Ive already got fresh gas a brand new battery. I am not familiar with outboard or any other boat motors for that matter any help on where I should start in fixing the problem would be GREAT! Thanks for your time

Don't rev the motor, you may blow it up in 10 seconds. Open the vent on the fuel tank cap, or be sure your tank is vented. Now, you can rev to 1000-1500rpms for a short time if on water muffs or in the lake(river) but not more than that, just to know it will throttle up. Give the forum the serial number of the motor, do a compression check and post those numbers, and a little more history of the motor if possible. Others here will be able to help in a better fashion then. Note: 50 : 1 fuel to oil ratio. Blue
