1975 Johnson 9.9

Hi all newbie here
My starter recoil is sticking won’t rewind unless I loosen the bolt that holds it on. It work fine when I loosen the bolt but then the bolt backs out .I have washer on top of recoil and inside on bottom as in the parts manuals .
Driving me nuts any help would be appreciated.

Is there any old dried up grease preventing it from moving freely? If so a tear down and cleaning might do the trick. Or you could try a new nylon lock nut that won’t back off easily.

There is a washer inside the recoil that is missing or out of place.----Easy fix.

When I replaced my 76 recoil it wouldn't rewind either until I sprayed some WD40 in there.

Find that washer and put it in the right place !

the washer inside is there

Make sure tab on bottom of the cup goes in the hole.-----Or install a new cup ?
