Hello all,

My novice friends and I bought a sweet little boat with a 1975 Johnson 85 hp outboard that has a issue at startup, wonder if anyone could give a diagnosis or good start procedure so we can see we where we are wrong.

When we get it running she works fine and we have no issues restarting it in the water after its been running. When starting it cold with the first try we generally get nothing but the battery rev. Second or so time we will get the engine to start firing and the prop to get moving then die or a little prop movement and that really annoying skreech of the starter spinner thingy coming off the bigger wheel. We keep trying it and eventually it gets going but I know it can't be good.

While we are doing this, after weve pushed the ball till its hard, my friend is turning the key with the button pushed in and the warmup lever up a little and I am with the engine holding down the manual choke because of the issue with it on this engine (is the warm up lever doing the same thing as the manual choke?) Last time we did it I saw a nice flame come out the back of the prop and subsequent trys after some smoke was coming out of it, which i dont think i've seen before....thats chill right...?

So clean the carbs?, just keep doing it its an old engine?

Thanks
