My motor didn't come with an airbox cover on it when I bought it. They are available on ebay in the states but not locally here in Australia currently. May find one at a wreckers if I'm lucky for $100 or so. Gasket is $27 from Crowley. Is it necessary to have this on or is it something that people commonly remove? Apart from silencing, I have read that it also holds onto fuel that might leak out of carbs when tilted up. There is also a vacuum hose from the the back of the box to the intake manifold which I guess may not serve much purpose with the cover removed.

Stop assuming.------It is NOT a vacuum hose.-----Not impossible to fabricate something to take the place of the factory cover.------Too bad you are so far away from plentiful supplies for your motor.

So the cover is important then? Does the hose drain away fuel that has leaked out?

Yes i'm feeling the pain of this model being a bit of a design transition. A parts motor would be great. The rear lower exhaust cowling cover was also missing. Thought they would be easy to get.

Here is my blunt advice.-----You need to do a complete evaluation of this motor before spending any money on parts.----Post results of compression test again, the actual numbers.----Inspect ,starter motor / ignition / lower unit / midsection / carburetors / fuel pump / pistons and rings.-----There may well be a good reason why these parts were missing and motor came into your hands.----Possible source for parts---evinrudeparts.ca

I have done most of what you have suggested already. Starter motor has been cleaned and inspected. I have transplanted an ignition system from 1980 model and am now getting good spark. Lower unit passed pressure test and I've replaced the impeller. Just the bent water tubes which i'm in the process of fixing. Inspected piston and rings through bypass covers and look ok. Waiting for a borescope to arrive in post. I have rebuilt carbs and inspected reeds. Cleaned fuel pump. Replaced fuel lines. I am close to firing up once i'm confident the cooling system is working. Your advice is good, I am not planning on spending any money until I have run the engine and retested compression and looked in the bores but am trying to plan out what I need so I know what i'm up for.

I like having the silencer on my engines. It quiets them down a little and keeps all these oily left over fuel from running down into the motor pan out down the leg. Probably cuts down the possibility of a fire as well.

I can find one that is for a 1972 model (part number 0385254). Mine is listed as 0320048. It looks the same in the pictures except that it has removable grommets whereas I think the 1975 model didn't have these but could be wrong. The part number for the base is different between the two models too. Does anyone know if this earlier model cover will fit on my 1975 air box?
