1975 hp Johnson reverse clicking

Hi guys,

I have a 1975 Johnson outboard 115hp and i have found that the engine wont go into reverse it just clicks and wont engage , i have tried to adjust the cable but then i either get forward or reverse but not both. this problem is driving me nuts can anyone help.

Sorry to tell you , but time for a set of new gears. Worst thing about this L/u is not many used left out there. Maybe try( red rhino) for gear set or a reman L/U.

If you bought this used, it sounds like someone has flipped the clutch dog around at some point.
At the very least you will need a new clutch. At the very most, you will need gears as well.

There are brand new replacement gearcases for that motor from SEI for < $700. if I ever needed a rebuild, I would just buy a new one from SEI or a used one from a salvage yard. you could probably buy another newer 115 for around $1K I prefer 1979 or newer, the 80s was a great year for outboards especially the latter part.

Thanks for the advice it has been invaluable. I dont suppose anyone has a clutch and gear set for said engine

Dumb question. Do you have the right oil in it ?? Should be using Premium Blend.

Hi paulgray. If you can't find what you need here, you might also want to check aomci.org. Lots of great old OMC guys over there with tons of parts and advice, usually for stuff that's a bit older, but I'm sure they know people who know people that can help. Good luck.

Great i will give the oil change a go first i think finding the parts will be fun to find, would anyone happen to know the difference between the 115ESL75E and the 115ETL75E so i can get the right parts
