So i bought a boat last year and started working on it. Not too much wrong with it, replaced the starter solenoid and it started right up. now after using it for a year i found not having a working tilt/trim setup was rather annoying while out boating. So I've been searching for a new motor and pump setup that would work for my motor. so on eBay i found one that said 1978 Evinrude tilt trim assembly for an 85 hp. so i bought it thinking that this would work for my motor. i received it and realized that that it was different than what looks like my motor would need. Does anybody know if there's a way to make this piece work for my boat? is there some other mounting bracket that would be interchangeable? or do i need to find another motor and pump setup? if anybody could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

It will not work. The one that you need will only be found on 1973 through 1977 20" V4 motors.

You will want to be sure that it is in perfect running condition and includes the harness and solenoid box, as the parts are scarce and very expensive.

To see the parts, go to the parts catalog for the 1976 Evinrude 85693G and look at the PT&T diagram. http://shop.evinrude.com/

Ok so i've looked around now and see that i can get the motor half of the assembly and i realized that the cylinder is still on the boat but does anybody know where i could get the lower half of the pump, or the pump and motor together?

If you look at the parts diagram, it shows that the assembly came with either a Calco or a Prestolite pump. Availability of the pump motors depends on which you have. Look at the reservoir to determine.

The trim/tilt unit you posted is the "newer" style unit. These type units were introduced in (I believe) 1978 or so. I actually saw a case where someone modified an earlier motor to use this type unit. However, as I recall, it required changing of the whole mounting bracket along with numerous other parts. It was quite an ambitious undertaking, to say the least.

The earlier trim/tilt you need for your motor is difficult to find, and usually go for significant $ on the used market. In addition, service parts for the earlier units can be difficult to source. The best bet is to use an aftermarket CMC unit. I put one of these on my '76 85hp - it worked great. These do cost a few bucks too... but sometimes they can be used for a reasonable amount. I got lucky and found a really clean unit for $200. The CMC unit is really the best option.
