Looking at buying this motor. Owner says it refused to shift into gear and the hydralic shift assist needs work. Is this a costly or involved job for the shade tree mechanic?
Does anyone know what this motor weighs with automatic tilt?

The '75 was Hydraulic Power Assisted Shift. It works on the same principal as power steering on a car.

Any work that needs to be done on it requires total disassembly of the gearcase. Fortunatly, they don't require a lot of work.

FR, you say, "Fortunately they don't require a lot of work". Is that to say they usually don't breakdown or they're easy to fix? Can I replace the pump without special tools?
It might need a new pump, maybe something else. What other possibilities are there to consider?

I would like to replace that 75hp in my avatar but I'm concerned about weight on a 16' boat. I think the 75hp is about 225 lbs.

I think I'd investigate the shift issue further. Don't be quick to rip it apart just yet.

I have a feeling that if your boat will float with a cabbage head motor it'll float with a 135. Now, applying twice the power to the transom might be a different story.....

The boat is rated for 100hp but the transom has a one inch bow to it already without the motor hanging on it. Hmmm?

The newer 100 probably weighs very close to what the old 75 weighs. But it has a heck of a lot more power.

Replacing the oil pump and/or power cylinder as I said requires a total teardown. They are the last parts to come out of the case and the first to go back in. There are a few special tools required, not the least of which is a honkin-big pair of snap ring pliers. And a special socket to properly torque the pinion nut. And some pullers stuff.

i have a 1976 invader intruder boat split hull and have a 1975 Johnson 135hp v4 motor on her. the motor sits great on the boat and she's only rated at 115hp . so as far as length and weight you shouldn't have an issue.

Before anything go over that transom with a fine tooth comb, the last thing that you want to see is the clouds before swimming with the fishies
