1975 Evinrude 115 v4 So i repaired and replaced the carbs, everythings back together, now what?

hey guys and gals!

So i did the carb kit process, new stuff in there followed all the guides and how to's followed the manual, and have everything back together, but have two questions

1. what the heck do i do now, i keep hearing about synchronizing the carbs, but i haven't seen where this is required, does anyone know a list of steps for me to follow now that i have things back together? ( i didn't replace the jets in the carb waiting for them on back order)

2. can someone point me towards a guide on setting the throttle cables and stop screws and that stuff? it got adjusted around and i know isnt where it needs to be but for the life of me i cant find any info on that

thanks everyone!

Okay, doing this from memory but, while looking at my engine, here goes... BUY a factory manual. If you can't these steps may work but no guarantees.

1. set timing pointer. remove plugs, turn flywheel slightyly past the TDC mark (an inch or so), insert and lock your piston stop tool, mark flywheel under pointer, turn fly wheel clockwise until piston is back against the stop, mark flywheel again. Find mid-point between two marks. turn flywheel so mid point mark is under the pointer. Moove needle to TDC mark on flywheel.

2. Move the throttle lever until the cam roller does not touch the cam.

3. loosen the lower carb adjusting lever screw. The spring should close the plates. Verify all plates are closed.

4. at the same time you press upward to remove the slop out of the linkage and tighten the screw. Now you move the follower and verify that all throttles start to open at the same time.

5. Now you need to set it so that the upper scribe mark on the throttle cam hits the roller where it contacts the cam. This is done with the adjusting screw right above the little roller. When its set correct the plates start to open right when the roller touches that top mark on the cam.

6. Now you need to adjust the throttle cable so that the idle stop screw just rests against the idle stop.

7. Now you need a timing light on the #1 wire. Start the motor and useing fast idle lever advance throttle until you get 4 degrees BTDC. shut motor off with out touching lever. Now adjust the throttle cam by useing the yoke to get the upper mark back to the contact point of the follower roller. I usually re check this as its a very important step. If you get this wrong the Max will be off.

8. Now you need to set the max advance. This is kind of tricky without a test wheel and tank. So be very careful and dont crash your boat if you dont have one.

9. Run the engine up to about 4400 rpm in gerar under load. Chect timing and make sure you are right around 28 degrees. stop the boat and move the advance stop screw accordingly. Righty tighty retards the timing.

10. Adjust your max throttle stop so that the plates are wide open and the pin just barely touches the stop.

11. turn idle adjustment screw so that you get about 700 rpm in gear under load.

I believe those timing specs are correct but you oughta wait til you get a manual.

Oh yeah, somewhere in there you gotta set the choke and its linkage so that the plates are open when off and just barely fully closed when on. You do that by moving the solenoid up and down in its mounts. Prolly should do that between step 6 and seven.

Awesome! thanks Jakedaawg! i really appreciate you taking the time so write all that out for me, and for sure im waiting for my manual to come so i will make sure i reference that too!

one last question, do i need to do all of the steps, especially with the timing for just removing and replacing the carbs? I don't think the timing has changed or anything and i know the motor was running before taking off the carbs, it was just installing the carb kits, or does taking the linkages off the carbs throw everything off and it has to be fully redone as you described?

thanks again for the awesome response!

It is recommended, You never know whos fingers were in it and moved what. On the other hand, if it ran fine your may be all set to go. I posted that due to your point number "2" in your original post. It really depends on how much the linkage got knocked out when you removed and installed the carbs.

For anyone else reading this also, you can not really skip any steps or serious engine damage could occur by getting the timing wrong. Also, that post was not meant to be a replacement for a factory manual, this is the inter web and I take no responsibility other than that it was posted in good faith.

hey Jakedaawg just though id post an update, still waiting on my manual so haven't tuned it properly yet, but seemed to have everything sorta figured out between the throttle linkages, timing settings, choke settings, carb float heights, leaky fuel lines, choke solenoids and all that good stuff i have my cold starts down to about 20 seconds and it runs like a dream the rest of the day!
