1975 70 HP Johnson issue

I have a 1975 70 HP johnson that idles fine, goes into gear and runs hooked to hose at home, but as soon as you take it to the lake it idles, but dies when put into gear.

Anyone have any ideas what might cause this?

What is the idle set at? Should be about 700-750 in gear in the water.

How would I check that? I am not to motor friendly.

You're gonna need a tach to check the RPM. Can you borrow or rent one somewhere?
