I repaced a 1983 40 hp Johnson with a 1975 50 hp. I used the 83 control. The 50 has set for 4 years. Cleaned the carbs, changed spark plugs, etc. Was running on both cyls. fine, but after running about 15 minutes on the muffs to make carb adjustments, lost all fire on both cyls. I have no manual on this engine yet, what steps should I take to help make a diagnosis? How can I determine if the power pac is the culprit?

Thanks.

Re: 1975 50 hp lost all fire.

Start by disconnecting the black/yellow wire at the pack and re test your spark. That is the killl wire. If you now have spark, your kill circuit is faulty. Check your key switch, shift switch and harness.

If still no spark we can troubleshoot from there. ONe of the reasons could be faulty cranking speed, you need at least 250 RPM to get fire.

Make sure all ground connections are clean and tight.

Also try disconnecting the rectifier and re testing.

Other than that, testing the pack without a spare pack requires a DVA meter/attachment. Do you have one?

I will start there, am working outside and is chilly here. Will respond with results later. I do not have a meter available at the moment.
Thanks for the response! As good as it was running, I will look for some obvious disconnects I may have created.
