1975 40hp Johnson , model # 40EL75C

I am wanting to reseal the lower unit and the seal kits I am seeing one is from 1960 to 1973 part # 18-2686 the other seal kit is from 1976 to 1988 part # 18-2659 where is 1974 and 1975. is seal kit 18-2686 the one that I need it looks like the one I need cause it has the spaghetti seal in it. any advice would be appreciated.

Hm-m-m-m??. I'd have to get into the parts books to see what year the drive shaft size changed. Basically, your motor is a resurrected 1960's Gale 40, which also appeared as Johnson and Evinrude 33hp motors. Of course, many evolutionary changes were made along the way, the drive shaft being one of them. You are correct, the one with a spaghetti seal would be the closest match. But the DS seal may not fit. Sierra may not have ever put together a seal kit for the big shaft. You may have to order individual parts from an Evinrude dealer.

The issue is even further confused by the electric shift motors that were built along the same time period. Safe to say those are not appropriate for your motor.

Sierra has the drive shaft seals they are part number 18-2029. But as was said I dont think they are offered in any seal kit. You can check part numbers and prices. A few years ago I bought the seal kit with the spaghetti seal, and also 2 driveshaft seals.So I have an extra driveshaft seal for a different motor. It worked out to be a little cheaper like that and all the parts came at once. I see the prices have changed so it might be cheaper to order the parts separately. If anything like my 40hp of that era you need 2 of those seals. They go back to back.
