so first off, thanks previous posts have helped but a problem has arose in my tower of power (not so much power) i cannot figure out why the motor will not run on its own. with the starter it will but when the key goes back to the "run" position it will not.

ive tried to dianose the problem my self for a couple of weeks now but i still come up holding nothing.

i did replace the key switch- after putting it on i tested the for continuity
for the :
Off D E (black & salmon/tan)
Start A F B (red, white, & yellow)
Run A F (red & white)

after that failed to produce, i started checking the continuity and broken wires from the keys witch wires to the plug in to the engine, and the engine plug in to their respective places on the engine.
the mercury switch is also completely disconnected.

i used a trigger to start the engine across the Ignition solenoid it started but still wouldnt run on its own.

Ive replaced the plug wires so those are all good, also in that process i took the distributor cap (marking if) cleaned it up. and tested the coil-which would lead to one problem but i dont know if it would keep the engine from running on its own it doesnt really have any resistance across it.

with all that being said i let a guy look at it and he said it looked like to him the stator has gone bad. but reading other posts-jimBc didnt even have a stator and his seemed to run.

sorry for rambling but im just looking for an answer i want to go fish =(

thanks

Edit: also i found a ground the main harness ground, grounded to block and not to the cowl- im on a search for a bolt to see if that helps of if it even matters.

I'd look into the wiring at the starter solenoid. That is if the problem was there before you put in the new ignition switch. I'd have to look up in the manual for where all the wires go, but you can handle that part.

Brandon, The stator has no connection to the ign system on that Merc. That is not the issue. In order to have spark, you need to make sure you have +12VDC on the non-distributor white whire on the switchbox, and the red wire next to it. If you have that, get on the CDIElectronics.com web site and run the troubleshooting test for your battery-powered CDI ignition test. It sure sounds like the trigger in hte distributor is bad, but since it is a $200+ part, I recommend you make sure.

It has 12.4v to both the red wire and to the white. Is there any way to test the trigger?

Would it even fire with out the trigger- it is firing just will ony run with the starter and not with out

Typical symtoms of trigger failure. Now PROVE it as there is NORETURN on electrical parts, and that trigger COSTS.

As already pointed out, download the Ignition Troubloeshooting Guide free from the Support page of CDIElectronics

Follow their detailed instructions to prove the trigger bad, then order it.

and for giggles i looked to see if all cylinders are getting a spark which they are.

Direct Volt Amps, very useful to load test any type of charging coil.

Your distributor ignition is not alternator/stator driven, it is a battery CD ignition.

Strange but these systems will fire on all cyl's while cranking just fine, but the momemt the starter is disengages the ignition fails to spark.

Pull al the spark plugs, pull the coil wire and attach the spark tester directly top the coil. Use a starter rope and pull as if you are going to rope start the motor, watch for spark. If none, proceed with the trigger testing and prove it bad, then order a new one.
