I've been looking for a project and I've have a chance to look at a 24ft 1974 Starcraft Chieftan with a 250 chev 6 cyl and OMC drive. He says the dash is getting rotten and the upper gears case has some leaks but otherwise it runs fine. The hull looks to have a few dents in the side and could use some paint.
I realize if the dash is rotted the floors, transom ect are probably needing work. He is asking $7500 for the boat.
To much?

Yah, probably.

The big Starcrafts are pretty awesome but that is a lot of coin.

Some photos of your potential project would be very helpful.

Happy hunting!

I'm not too framilar with the prices on larger Chieftains but I bought my 1971 21' for $950 with a good Mercruiser 165, a nice straight hull and a good trailer. It needs a new deck, new upholstery, and some other minor work but I was running and on the lake within a few days of dragging it home.

I also saw a 1972? 22' Chieftain on the local Craigslist with the same Mercruiser drive and a running engine in even better cosmetic shape but needing engine work (knock) for $1500, might even be down to $1200 now.

I also had the chance to buy a 25' Chieftain for $1,000 last year with an OMC drive, however it needed to be completely gutted and probably would have ended up needing quite a bit of work on the engine and drive.

I think the price is high. For $7500 I would want it to be cosmetically and mechanically perfect and have a Mercruiser drive.

Here is a pic. But after searching a bit on the net the price does seem high. Maybe if it were repowered with a merc drive and the dash wasn't rotten. I'm thinking with the work it needs it isn't worth half that. He did have the upholstery redone 5 years ago. I would never get my money back out if I ever decided to sell it.
I could probably get an Islander 16+ years newer for that price and have a merc drivetrain.

Sweet boat. Way over priced though.

If the dash is rotten I'd venture to say just about all the rest of the wood has some form of rot too.

Keep looking man, you'll find one:)

if it had a tiller:D

The OMC stern drive only leaks a little. And only a little rot. If it was close, I would look at it, but not to buy. Part of the education process. If the seller honestly thinks those are minor problems, well.... For $7500 it better not need work for a long time other than normal maintenance. My $0.02.

I picked my chief up for $950.00 I have put lots into it since then. and there is no end in sight lol Cool big tubs . The 165 is suppose to be a good to be a good engine. I still have not had mine fired up yet. Its still sitting in the garage. I just finished the transom up on the weekend. Now its sime to put everything back together. If the transom is solid and the rest is in excellent shape its worth a few bucks but 7500 is a tad steep. Good luck in your search.
