Hey guys just picked up a boat that has the motor pictured on it. Boat has been sitting for 20 years really curious as to any and all information about this motor or where I could get parts ? I know I need plug wires for starters. Have not attempted to fire due to wanting to get a good check list of things before potentially damaging the motor! Had a buddy mention a new water impeller?? Thanks in advance guys any and all info would be great!

To look up parts for any mercury you will need the serial # that will tell you exactly what you have.

After viewing the images I would say that the motor has a lot of issues, leaking block? (above plug wires), heavily corroded LU that is going to be a headache to work on and the wiring could be disintegrating (not seen in pictures); even the shift or throttle cable is rotten. To be a reliable and safe motor you would have to replace a lot of parts. The boat is probably in a similar state of decline. Your motor has been badly neglected and it will take some money to get it restored. Yes I would separate the LU from the driveshaft housing first and see if the waterpump can be repaired - there is a nut under the trim tab that must be removed. Drain the gear lube.
The plug wires are screwed into the cap so don't pull them out. Lower-Unitsdriveshaftsmall2.jpg

I have 7 Mercs and I have done work on them so I know what's involved. Here's' a source for wires etc. http://store.oldmercs.com/category_s/887.htm

The ser. Nr. should be on a plate between the thumbscrews and on the block near starter.
