Hello all,
Well I feel I'm finally in the right place. I accquired this boat when I purchased a house. The previous owner gave me all the paperwork and what information he could and said good luck. It ran in till 2006 when it was stored and left. He said the universal joint needed to be replaced due to some clanking at end of season. HMMM.. It is a 1974 Glastron carlson CV 18ss that has a Ford 302with 351 heads, a 4 bbl carb, log style manifolds and a Volvo Penta 270 outdrive.

Also are these good boats or junk?

Well I let it soak for a week and tried to get it to turn to no avail, so apart it is. I've been trying to get information on this boat but can't seem to find another one anywhere. The allmighty Google has let me down. Are these boats out there or do I have the only one?

Any help on parts both boat and i/o would be greatly appreciated as I'm ready to start working on it. Pictures of other ones would be great to see.DSCN1992.jpgDSCN1994.jpgDSCN1993.jpgDSCN1145.jpg

Welcome to the forum. You should post your engine and drive questions in the Volvo repair forum. The engine gurus don't hang out much here in resto.

That is a really cool hull! Since you're asking if it's a good boat, I will say that older Glastrons, while neat looking, were not particularly well built. So if this one spent any time outside uncovered, there's a strong change the deck/stringers/transom are rotted. Good luck with your project.

There's one for sale on the Madison, WI craigslist right now actually.

I think you're right to post both here and on the classicglastron site. Both are excellent resources.

I don't believe anyone in the club has a CV-18ss, and I've only seen a couple come up for sale the last few years...maybe 2 for sale total.

The boat itself is a good boat, the hull is well constructed, but I'd check for rot, etc. As for the powerplant...I'm not real sure what you want to do, but if at all possible, it might be time to switch to a more standard mercruiser setup.

A 4.3L V6 or V8 would do nicely in that boat, but would also require a total rebuild on your part...just a thought.

*Added*:

To ezmobee's point...yeah, they definitely had some construction issues when it came to sealing up the hull...you'll want to check for rot all around the transom & stringers.

Thanks for the responses. The boat itself seems solid but how do I check for sure. I don't feel any soft spots in the floor. Do I need to pull it apart or is that the sure way to tell? Also Isn't the tramsom (Back of boat right?) fiberglass? As far as I know it was well cared for untill it"s last storage in which it spent 3 years outside under cover and tarp. Not the best but better than nothing.

I've been looking at your pictures...and you're right on, the original upholstery looks great...so its definitely been cared for.

IMO, you're probably in pretty good shape, its never sat outside in the weather with everything looking like it does. Tap around the inside on the transom...if it sounds hard and solid, you're good. Soft or crumbly, mushy...obviously there are issues...it really is a nice housewarming gift you got there.

Re: 1974 Glastron Carlson cv 18ss

Hi Harry, I'm still here just not as much as I'd like to be. Things are so busy with work and this project I just search the site for quick answers and head out to the shop and see what I can do. Things are moving along. I decided to rebuild for the sake of keeping it original and I feel the old blocks are better quality. The engine should be done this monday. The carb, starter and alternator are all done (rebuilt). I put new greaseable u-joints in and have most of the external parts striped to bare metal and painted ford red. I got a new set of gaskets from osco for the manifolds as well. Been having some battle with all the broken bolts and frozen parts due to it sitting for so long. I've developed quite the relationship with PB Blaster and my dremmel.

I'll post some pics as soon as I can find my battery charger for the camera. Thanks to all here.

You should consider yourself quite lucky....I have been looking for yrs for one of those...about 5k and a lot of work that boat would still be on the bleeding edge of design and total appeal....But then again that is only a opinion...

A lot of work indeed . And so far the old saying is holding true...BOAT....break out another thousand. I've been searching everywhere for another one and I've finally found my twin. So here it is, so what it's in Germany. If only mine looked like this beauty.

I see the NY stickers on it. Where in NY are you located? I have a CV-18 SS jet drive and live in eastern CT. Love to see more photos...

I'm in Hudson Valley area , Poughkeepsie to be exact. I'll get some pictures up soon. I've been going like crazy to get her going this season. Once it's in the water, I'd be cool to meet and run them together. It would be quite the show seeing two 18's running side by side

Any pictures of yours?
