Howdy All,
I have a 1974 70 HP Evinrude (70442M). Works great but looking to add the ability to charge batteries while under way. I see that I can purchase a kit that comes with a new stator, rectifier, and voltage regulator. Only issue I have is I don't know how to install it. Stator/Rectifier I think is straight forward, the voltage regulator though I am unsure of placement or wiring. My Evinrude Manual doesn't show/provide any guidance on the charge system option since its aftermarket.

Any pictures showing currently working/installed system would be appreciated or a manual/installation guide would be awesome.

Thanks in advance

They all left the factory with the battery charging system.----Have you done any testing to see if anything is wrong with yours ??

your engine should have 2 yellow wires connected to this rectifier which will charge your battery !! ...usually wired back to the main incoming B+ post on the solenoid (see the fat red cable another one to a fuse) .

Thanks all
I was under the impression it was an aftermarket mod because of the voltage regulator. I will have to test it when I pull the boat out again. Any reason why the kit has a voltage regulator (581307) vs what is already common on the engine?

Thanks,

Your motor probably has the optional high output alternator kit installed

Ah, so the regulator is for the High output vs the standard. Still need to pull the boat out, but good to know I should see volatge coming back to the battery from the engine while running.

Thanks,

You don't see much especially at idle. I hook up my meter and watch it slowly work it's way up.

It's not like a car.

Good to know, any idea what I should see at idle vs at speed?

Amperage goes up but voltage is negligible. Rectifier works with the battery to stay within limits. Some of it is above my pay grade.

It will get over 13 volts.

A RECTIFER converts the AC voltage from under the flywheel. To a series of pulsating D C volts to be regulated by a Regulator Module. Somewhere on the engine. There usually is a fuse holder somewhere in the red wire circuit. To blow out a fuse if a dead battery is being charged. If a battery is really run down ? like 12.00 vdc.
First charge it up on a REAL 120 vac charger to full charge. Let it rest for several hours. Then check water level in each cell. If low ? Add a correct amount. You now have a fully automatic battery charger on your boat.

My old Evinrudes Will go right past 18 volts as the battery nears full charge. If you have dead night lights " Your battery is WAY WAY overcharged. I have small digital dash mounted volt meters. I have a resistor in series to drop the volts down to 15 vdc when needed.

Thankfully never had dead lights. Just always believed the enigne didn't provide any recharge. Will need to check the voltage when I get it back out sometime.
