Hi everyone so I took my 6hp 1974 fisherman out this morning and it ran great. I noticed when I first started it at the dock it would cough every now and then in the shift position. The coughing stopped for the rest of my trip and it was running excellent. When I got back home and threw it in my test tank to flush it out, it started coughing a lot more and sometimes shutting the motor off. Now sometimes it will be idling okay then start coughing for a little bit then go back to idling okay.

Open the low speed mixture needle 1/4 turn at a time.----Inspect thermostat as they are often missing or stuck open.-----Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" on both leads ?

I have already tried turning the low speed mixture 1/4 at a time and this did not change anything. It has been idling great all up until today and I never touched the low speed mixture after I set it so I wouldn’t suspect that to be the problem. Could a stuck thermostat cause an issue like this because I do suspect I need to change this one soon because the the tell tale water can almost be too hot to touch sometimes. Yes confirmed spark is fine as well as coils.

You have not installed a new impeller ?-----I guess I missed the fact that you tried adjusting the mixture in post #1----Sorry.

Yes i installed a new impeller a few months ago so it’s pumping great. I checked the points and made sure they were gapped correctly, replaced condensers. I will check the coils with a multimeter to see if they are okay. It seems that I’m getting good spark and the timing is okay. Like I said it was running great all that day until I went to flush it out in a test tank. I’m assuming it has to be a fuel issue because I had this same problem with a 72 9.5 where it would cough sometimes at idle and after cleaning the carb it never did it again.

BTW cleaning the Carb is not getting a can of Gumout or other carb cleaner, and spraying down the Throat. All that gets you is a nice clean throttle valve.
You need to take it apart, including the disc above the Idle ports, and then clean it. A replacement disc is included in the Carb Kit.

Yes I make sure to do this with all my carbs thanks for the heads up though.

What do the plugs look like? Usually coughing is caused by a lean condition. Most likely the carbs but a cylinder can get extra oxygen from other sources during ignition, if you know what I mean?

I had a feeling that would solve your problems...
Glad you got it sorted out.
Ya I had a feeling it was going to be the carb as well. Looks like the carb had never been rebuilt it had the original float and gaskets. Float was a little out of level too. Runs like a champ now. Thanks for the help!

Yup mine was all original too.
Nicest looking cork float I've come across.

Ready to go, assuming the nozzle and bowl gaskets are replaced. Fuel proof model airplane glue/sealer will work if desired for use on the cork float. I use them as is if in good condition (one pictured is in off-the-shelf condition.

I used an original oem kit from marineengine.com it comes with the black float. It did have the original cork float however it look pretty gummed up so I just threw it out.
