I have a 1974 302. I had the carb rebuilt about 2 months ago. Ran great for about 20 hours. Now it will start and idle great. Run great going slow at lower rpms. Get to WOT soon as boat is getting to plane it dies. Replaced all filters, fuel line, anti siphon valve, spark plugs. And still does the the same. I’m Thinking it’s the fuel pump. Also my coil gets hot, super hot. But it has always done that when running good. Want to do a pressure test on fuel pump under a load but I live about 1.5 hours from the water. Thank you

Welcome aboard

Regarding the fuel system. Check your filter, check the anti siphon valve, and check your fuel pressure

Regarding the coil, they do get hot, about 180 degree hot. That is about 30 degrees warmer than you can keep your hand on. That is normal

You should have points, make sure your ballast (resistor or wire) is still intact, and you properly set dwell and timing

Thank you Scott.
I have been reading and it seems like the fuel pump I have will have a built in fuel filter? I didn’t know this I just changed the inline. Can I get a good reading on the fuel pressure without the boat being under a load?

By reading you are only guessing

You need to test

Look at your fuel pump. If there is a glass bowl on it with a fuel filter in the glass bowl, then yes, you have a filter on your pump. If not, you dont

That is part of your problem. The rest of your fuel system upstream of the filter needs cleaning too

I took the carb off, to the bowl and float apart it was really clean but I sprayed throughly with carb cleaner. Replaced fuel lines. And pumped a couple gallons of fresh gas through the fuel pump. Any other thing I should do?

Open the tank and look in there siphon some gas off the bottom where debris will accumulate see what it looks like
