I have a 1974 25hp Evinrude. Yesterday when I put the boat in the water and attempted to pull start the motor, the pull rope initially grabbed the flywheel (per normal) and pulled all the way out and then would not retract. I tried to gently give it a few jerks to get it to recoil but it wouldn't. I noticed that under the housing where the recoiled rope should be, the metal tabs attatched to a disc would turn freely.
So I re-trailered the boat and took it home. I then removed the pull starter housing and turned it over. The housing is intact but I noticed one of the above mentioned metal tabs was missing (broke off). Unknown how long it has been missing and I could not find a broken off metal tab lying under the cowl cover or on top of the recoil assembly.
What if anything can I do to remedy this issue?? Can the recoil be fixed or is it easier to purchase a new or used one??
Any help would be appreciated.
