Does anyone know where the nuetral lobes should be when in forward gear. It looks to me Like there is a lobe for every gear but when u put it in forward I'm off the highest lobe. Is this right? Or do I need to adjust. I'm saying thus because it seems to come out of gear easily because it isn't locked in.

Please don't start a conversation in the middle, mg8.

Start by telling us what you are doing and why.

Thanks. :)

I have restored this motor and on a test run it jumped into nuetral. It doesn't seemto lock in gear so that's why I'm asking.

Re: 1974 15 horse

I just looked at a '74 9.9 (same thing). top lobe is correct, w/spring settling into it. In forward, it's 'aiming' at the center of the fuel pump. If that looks good, check the upper/lower shift shaft coupler. If it jumped into neutral and stayed there, it's probably an adjustment issue/coupler/linkage etc. If it goes into neutral and immediately slams back into forward, you may have a clutch dog/forward gear issue. Good luck, hope this helps..

Did it ever work properly?

Well, let's start with the basics. Did you un-thread the lower shift rod for any reason?

Did you pull the lower unit and not get the lower shift rod properly connected? Bolt through shift rod cutout. It's possible for the connector to "grab" the lower shift rod if the bolt is above the rod.

If you're sure the above is OK, there is a link and detent adjustment, but let's not go there quite yet.

Also, has this been assembled from different motors? Nothing wrong with that...just need the data.

I did unthread the lower rod inside the lower unit. I took it out to clean and get a bunch of junk out. It threaded back in to tight. Do you think I did something wrong?

Why the cloak n dagger regarding the questions asked?

Correct and incorrect answers cost the same here. Wouldn't you rather have the former...This may not be the correct answer in your particular circumstances!

There is a lower shift shaft height dimension per the service manual that is adjustable via the lower shift shaft "thread in" amount.

That said, you can normally make this up this difference by adjusting the shift link threaded clevis inside the power head that controls "lobes"(your term) in your original post. Removal of small cotter, washer, and pin needed..

The service manual describes this adjustment, but it's essentially...

In the neutral detent position, it is equidistant from forward gear mesh to reverse gear mesh. It is done by feel as to when the gears begin to engage.

As you move from the neutral detent in each direction, you should feel the gears begin to "touch" in equidistant dimensions.

I'd suggest you post the answers to questions asked. There is a huge knowledge base on this forum for that motor.

If you plan to keep the motor, it would be a wise investment to pickup a factory service manual for that specific year. Ebay, currently has them for ~$25 delivered.
