1973evivenrude 25 hp

my 73 evinrude,been overhalled, works good,but when going across water
about every 6 seconds it makes a frump or thump sound, it dont cut out
or rev up. the hub in prop is not turning. other than this noise it works good.
any ideas? LOWER UNIT SOLID

Presumably not a meatllic knock.

A misfire perhaps. Check/clean/reset preferably replace plugs. (J4C gapped 0.030") Check plug leads. Its an old points ignition system so check/clean/reset/replace breakers. Also inspect coils.

A "lean sneeze" perhaps. Maybe carb is in need of a clean.

Easiest/ cheapest things first. difficult/expensive things last.

If it feels like you're hitting a log, it's a bad clutch dog/forward gear. Does it do this a low speed? You say, "lower unit solid" - have you had it apart and inspected the gears and dog?
