1973 volvo penta please help

I have a 1973 volvo penta 4cyl with a 270 outdrive here is my problem i had it under muffs and it will run for a bit then it starts cutting out so i messed with a few things and took it to the lake to back it in the water and i ran it for about 10mins and it started cutting out again like it was not getting fuel idk but i couldnt get it started after that and answer for this

Fuel issues....Ignition issues....

Fairly simple to test each system and find the problem.

idk im not much of a boat guy ive messed with a few fuel issues what in the ignition area would case this?

distributor, spark plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, incorrect timing, pretty much anything.

Did the motor die? or just stumble and pick back up?
Have you checked the fuel system?

it slowly cut out and then it died and would not start for about 30mins i didnt check very much on it just basic stuff i guess

Maybe it wasn't getting fuel. Does the accelerator pump jet pump fuel if you pump the throttle? Is there a filter in the fuel system? Did you replace it and check the contents in the old filter? Fuel lines to the tank clear inside and the hose clamps tight? Antisiphon valve or screen on pickup plugged? air leaks????

Only way to diagnose your issue is to start ruling things out.

Start with the fuel system if thats what you think it is.
Are the filters clogged? is the tank vent clogged? is fuel getting to the carb? is the fuel good? water in it?

This is where I go for exploded views. You have to know what kind of engine you have and kinda sort through the pics they have, but they are very easy to navigate. This has been really helpful to us.

Try to limit threads to one topic at a time. Otherwise your initial question gets lost. FWIW, many of us were doing the same thing when we first started on this forum. There are so many things to fix at the beginning.

Did you watch the Engine temp. My motor did that from air leak causing the sea water to not get to impeller. When it cooled down it would start right up again.
