Would anyone know if I could just bypass the mechanical fuel pump altogether and just put a small inline electric pump on this motor?

It is a diaphragm pump and they are " ultra reliable " as well.-------What is your motor doing / not doing that leads you to believe you need an electric fuel pump ?????

I was reading a service manual today. I was out on a boat I just got for the first time. 87 Chaparral 178xl. I thought the tank was empty, never checked to see if the gauge worked, so I stopped for gas on the way to the lake. I checked an old chappie brochure and it said my boat supposedly came with a 20 gallon tank, so I put 12 gal in and a quart of oil for 50:1. Gauge was reading halfish tank. Ran awesome for about half an hour, started surging, at half throttle, idling rough, shut off. Got it started, would only run with warm up lever on, wouldn't rev very high. Pulled the fuel line and it smelled kind of funky. I thought bad gas was previously in the tank, out fresh in, sloshed it around on the water, stirred up gunk, gummed up the carbs and filter. Then I read a service manual where it said the surging is fuel pump related? I really need to find a manual specific to my motor and the power pilot so I can properly set the cables and rebuild the carbs etc.

For and original factory service manual, check out this website: outboardbooks.com. Don't waste your money on any other service manuals. Surging can be fuel pump related. When you have surging, have a buddy constantly prime the fuel hose bulb. If the engine runs fine at WOT as long as you keep priming the fuel hose bulb, then there is a fuel delivery problem to the engine. Which can include a weak fuel pump. Basically, the engine is consuming fuel faster than the pump can supply it to the carb fuel bowls. Other fuel supply issues: Make sure the tank pickup is clear/open and that the anti-siphon valve does not have any crud in it. I am a fan of the original factory type fuel pump. Elegantly simple, inexpensive and very reliable. Doubt your fuel pump is original, but it could be old. Old pumps may have been made with rubber components (bladders, etc.) which do not tolerate today's ethanol-based fuels. Will cause them to fail with continued use. Consider replacing it in kind with a new pump.

Ok I'm spent. I pulled the carbs today, spotless. Checked the tank, spotless. Cranked the motor with the bowl drains open, gas powered out so the pump is good. No gas coming out of air intake. Plugs are new. Power pack is a year old, coils are new, compression is 125-130 across the board. The boat ran fantastic then just wouldn't start, and when it did start would only run on the warm up lever. Now it just attempts to start.

How do I adjust the idle? Its got two, two barrel carbs and I dont see any actual idle screws. I'm stumped
