Hello fellow Johnson owners. I picked up this 1973 Johnson 65hp with my project boat and I have a "what is this" question.
There is a resin like substance under the stator / flywheel assembly that I think could be from an overheated stator winding. Could some of you have a look at my pictures to see the areas in question.

I've also added a link to my 1974 StarCraft Holiday 16' restoration thread.

Thanks,

If its resin then yes it will most likely be from a failing overheating stator, although i have re-epoxied some in my time with success.
Putting a multimeter to it can help you see if its going bad.
Also double check its not oil, if the top seal fails oil will leak out a bit, either way looks like you will be removing the flywheel.

Looks like a nice boat after you removed all the floatsam inside

1973 models were notorious for that. It is the charge coils' insulating goo. By "charge coils", I mean those that charge the power pack. The first clue of trouble ahead will be hard starting. Usually will have spark with plugs removed, but not with plugs installed.....because it cranks faster with plugs out. How to fix it??? Replace the stator. Sorry 'bout that.

Currently the engine is in dry dock with the boat. I was able to verify cylinder compression readings of 130 psi on #1, 130 psi on #2 and 125ish psi on # 3 cylinder. I figured those readings are good enough for me and I'll work on getting it running in the spring. Too cold to do much but shovel snow right now.

I can't get the picture of #3 uploaded so you'll have to trust me :)
