1973 evinrude 65 hp cooling problem?

Hello all, hoping someone can point me in the right direction for some pictures of diagrams for where water should be coming out of the engine to show that water is being sent up to the head and cooling the engine.<br />Why I'm asking--- I was recently given a boat/engine/trailer combo. I've removed the old fuel, cleaned the tank put in a new battery and new plugs, and the engine fired up with several tries- not too bad from somethign that hadn't run in 3-4 years at least. I put muffs on the lower intake vents and with the hose turned on water sprays out of two small hole son the lower unit. My neighbor said he thinks that water should be coming out two larger hole up higher on the engine. his thought is that there should be some sort of water stream coming out of a hole above the water line so you can see it and know that the impeller and water pump are working .(He runs a 84 evinrude 35hp and he gets a constant stream shooting out at a 45 deg angle above the water line.) Where as the two small holes the waters coming out on my engine would be below the water line if the boat was in the water.<br /><br />I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for info. Witht he boat came Selco's Johnson/Evinrude outboard vol IV book, which mentions that water should spit out showing the waterpump is working but they don't show "where" the water should be coming from. ( actually they show one picture which is so bad you can't see anything useful) <br /><br />Thanks folks, I appreciate any info you can provide- Howard B Syracuse NY

Welcome Howard<br />I think sometime around 1974 is when telltales were introduced. If your motor is what I am thinking of, you have thru the hub exhaust and two exhaust ports beloww the cowling. When you are on the muffs, the easiest path for the water is thru the prop and your two upper exhausts will be pretty dry. When the lower unit is submerged and idling, the backpressure from the hub exhaust is too great at an idle, and you will see exhaust and a mist of cooling water from the upper exhaust ports. When you throttle up, you will notice the exhaust and mist will disappear from the upper ports, and the majority of exhaust and cooling water will exit thru the hub. Check to see if you can hold your hand on the head for a second or two when running. If so your good to go. If you don't know when the impellar was changed last, I would change it out now. The factory manual can be had at theoutboardwizard.com site and is much better than the one you have now.<br /><br />Good luck

angus63,<br />Thanks for the scoop. Yes the exhaust is through the hub. I'm glad you mention the back pressure at idle perhaps not being enough for the upper exhaust ports to shoot out anything. I was considering cutting down a 55 gal barrel to make a small tank to check the running with the prop totally submersed. Not sure if I'll have enough water in there to keep the water flow from knocking the barrel over though. I had idled up the engine with the muffs on and let it run a little faster than idle for approx. 60-90 seconds. I see in reading my current manual (after the fact of course) that what I did is a "no-no" as it may cause a runnway condition. Not sure what this means completely but the book advised against it. After shutting it down so my neighbor and I could talk without talking over the engine there was no problem placing your hand on the head it was pretty cool at that time. No where near as cold as the rest of the lower unit- which was really quite cold. So we weren't sure if it didn't have time to heat up and I just got lucky wiht it not overheating. I noticed some dead bumble bees inside one of the lower vent areas, and an not sur eif there might be a nest up there too. I noticed in another post on this site another person had a problem with mudwabers building a nest under the impellar. Sounds like dropping the lower unit is in order. <br />I was going to drop the lower unit to check the impellar but in reading the manual it sounds like it maybe a little tricky as I have to disconnect the electronic shift wires. I'll check the site you mentioned and it sounds as if I should get another book besides the one I have. Motors that sit awhile often become a "bug condo".<br />Good idea not to rev a two-cycle without a load. A runaway can be an eye-opening experience. I never exceed 1500 rpm.<br />To check if your upper ports are misting, run the motor at an idle in NEUTRAL in a garbage can full of water and you'll see what I'm referring to.<br />After idling 10-15 min., head should be at operating temp (appx 140°F)<br />The OEM manual from theoutboardwizard.com is by far the best manual to have.<br />I would invest the 2-3 hrs and $40 on a complete OEM water pump kit (not just impellar) before heading to the lake.<br />With the manual, changing the water pump is a simple procedure.<br />With the LU off, you can hook up the garden hose to the motor water tube and give it a good flushing.<br />Good luck

angus63,<br />thank you again. I've emailed the outboardwizard to get a cost and availablility on the manual I need. I see the water pump kits are pretty reasonable on their site. I certainly don't need to be blowing up a motor the first time out. <br /><br />Hopefully I'll hear back from them soon. Summer is too short here in upsate NY to miss any possible lake time if you know what I mean.
