1973 evinrude 135

Hello everyone, I have a 1973 Evinrude 135hp motor. it will run fine with the cowl off, but if you put it on it dies. do ya have any idea of what it might be? thanks...

Could be the spark plug wires are too close to the metal clamps on the cover; try moving the wires so that they are not in contact.

You could also be pulling exhaust into the engine compartment if the exhaust seals are not in place.

Usually caused by a engine that's breathing its own exhaust fumes.

That engine had a lot of punch for it's time, and it was also rather light weight. I looked around quite some time before I found one. The trouble was, It was not unusual to go BANG. Start with a compression check.

Mine runs around 125-135 PSI at sea level.

The most common cause of the problem is the exhaust seal between the inner exhaust and the gearcase is misplaced or deteriorated.

Failure of the adapter gasket (#18) will put exhaust into the powerhead cover.
