This motor runs good when first started then after increasing rpms I watch the voltage increase a couple volts as it should to charge battery. But when I return to idle and the charging voltage drops I get a cough and the engine quickly dies out. I have replaced stator and rectifier and was wondering where to go from here. I am watching this voltage movement on a engine analyzer as the volts drop engine dies. It starts right back up and is ok at idle and when revved up again and then back to idle volts drop she dies. I am skunked! I am thinking powerpack problem, but would like other opinions. Help! thanks

The powerpack is not connected to the battery voltage. It runs off the charge coils, not the alternator coils. Both are on the stator.

Its a brand new stator. But the problem is the same as it was before I changed it. $300 bucks wasted so far. ny ideas what else?

Re: 1973 Evinrude 115 hp Ignition dilemma

ok figured it out! First the temp assembly wires were bad where they go into the head and probably sending a ground to the terminal...fixed that. Then it ran better and I was able to set idle timing to 5 deg and then I set carb sync and it just idled beautifully in the tank for an hour after restarts, revs, in gear out of gear ect. Personaly I think the rpms have to be high enough to keep the charge circuit working properly. Along with the bad wire, my idle speed was too low and when I lowered startup lever it ran too low for the charge circuit to work hence creating a cough and dying. Anyway she's ready now. Ky Lake here I come!

Here is a link to a troubleshooting guide.

You might also look at your timer base and make sure that it rotates as it should. The vinyl sheath that protects the conductors connected to the timerbase can become very stiff ,not letting the timer base return to idle position.

Re: 1973 Evinrude 115 hp Ignition dilemma

hi ,, my 115 omc v4 in jet boat overheated and engine died
replaced ignition pack that drive 4 coils
all ohmmeter and peak voltage seem to b ok
charging voltage at start speed 170 +
4 trigger voltages at each lead
NO SPARK
over tem sensors located in heads are disconnected
have tried to remove flywheel with correct puller AND accetline torch
wont come off
any suggestions
ps this boat had water in engine well for years before i bought it
in florida,,, before it overheated it ran + 28 mph
