I have a 1973 70 H that won't start. When I first got it abbout 2 months ago i primed with start fluid and it started. we took it to the lake would not start with out start fluid. but it did start and ran real well for about 2 hrs. We went a second time and same thing had to use start fluid. But ran fine. third time electric choke would not work. and it would not start. Manually choked and still would not start. seems like it isn't getting fuel. replaced fuel pump but still no go. if we put start fluid in it turns over and runs for a couple seconds. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It ran so well the first two times and we had a blast. Now the party is over. any advice? carb bowls have fuel.

OK! First--please don't use starting fluid or even gasoline --it washes off the oil from internal parts and can cause damage with continued use. Use 50 to 1 gas to oil premix to prime the engine.

Now it's time to get down and dirty. You say the carbs have fuel in the bowls so they are getting fuel but when you run out of prime the engine gets no gas and stalls.

So, first we will assume that everything up to the carbs is ok. Now you need to remove the carbs, disassemble, and spray everything with WD 40. Pay specific attention to the three or four small holes above the butterfly and clean the thin brass tube that runs from the bowl to the carb top with a fine pipe cleaner or a fine copper wire. On the bottom you will see a brass jet screwed into the casting. Again, clean it with a pipe cleaner.

Re-assemble everything and set the low speed needles to 1 1/4 turns out from lightly seated. Now try to start the engine. If it starts, set the needles to a better idle but under no circumstances set them to less than 3/4 turns out. Leaner than this and you will melt pistons.

If it still doesn't start, then check the complete fuel system from tank to pump for restrictions or clogs.
