I recently picked up a 1973 9.8 Thunderbolt and i cant get any spark. History on the motor: Previous owner had it since new and swears it probaly has less than 20 hours on it. He sold the boat it was on years ago and the motor has been in the garage ever since. (we've all heard that story)When i took the cowl off of it this motor looks immaculate. I seriously dont think there has ever been a screw or bolt turned on it since new. The only thing i could obviously see wrong was the wires to the kill switch were corroded and cracked. After turning the motor a time or two, i checked, and wasnt getting any spark. I disconnected the kill switch wires to eliminate them grounding out anywhere and still no spark. I pulled the rewind starter and flywheel, took the cover off the module and checked the wiring and points, wiring looked as new with no corrosion or broken wires at all. The points were pretty much corroded though. I filed them down clean and checked the gap hoping to put it back together and see at least a weak spark but still nothing. Sanding down the points doesnt seem to work on these outboards like it did on my old trucks. Anyone have any ideas about what i need to take a look at next? I do have a mercury factory service manual for this motor but it doesnt have much about troubleshooting in it, other than checks you can do to ohm out the stator and coils. I just thought there might be someone here that could point me towards something that might be pretty common to these motors not firing. Thanks for any and all help.

Is that motor the one with phase maker? Points and a stator, no powerpack?

If so the stop switch HAS to be grounded in order to produce spark, this system is reverse to what you know.

If you ground the switch and get spark the switch is ok, probably just the wiring. If you ground it to the motor and get spark but not via the switch then the switch could be bad or have a bad ground. I can help you troubleshoot after you post back if that doesn't work.

Here's a simple test from CDI for your system.

So hard to tell which ignition is in which motor, I hate Merc's for that.

Thanks for all the help. I had no idea the stop switch has to be grounded to work on this motor. As soon as i get home i'll get to work on it and let you know what i come up with. According to the manual i have, the ignition system on my motor is the Thunderbolt Maker-Point ignition with module, at least thats what it most resembles in the pictures, and it doesnt have a switch box like the newer motors have.

The engine won't run with the orange wire grounded, you got some bad advice.

Its fixed and running! I pulled the flywheel and module cover back off, replaced the orange looking wire from the module to the kill switch, also replaced the ground wire from the condenser mounting screw to the case. Those two wires were all i saw that looked damaged. After putting it back together i pulled it a couple times and had spark so i put it in a barrel of water, hooked up the gas line, and after 5-6 pulls it started right up. Its spitting water pretty decent but to be safe im going to put a new impeller in it and also clean the carb and put a kit in it. Thanks for everyones help.
