1973-65hp impeller?

Was going to help someone with replacing impeller.<br />My manual is for 71-89 1&2 cylinders so i dont have an exact match.. Should i put it in gear or neutral? Is there any tricky linkage to release to drop lower unit? I have replaced some on other motors and wasnt to much trouble. <br />thanks for the help, Don

wit johnson the shifter position is no probablen it disconectunder the carbs unless it is a eletric shift . there is 2 wires that goes down to the foot that disconect under the hood . you wil have to tape them to a wire like a cloths hanger tofeed them back through the rubber gromet . if there is one cable then it is eletric .

Putting it reverse make the shifter linkage a little bit easier to get at.

most of those have 3 bottons . had one that had a built in switch that activated when you moove throdle foward .

If your sure it is not electric shift, then remove the carb muffler to better view gain access to the little lever linkage under the carbs but close to the block, there is a screw that goes through the pivot point and linkage to the lower unit. Remove the 4 lower unit bolts, remove the zinc anode. Under the zink anode (this is basically in front of the prop but mounted on the end of the tail of the lower unit.. there is a bolt under there and one longer one just in front of that. so we are talking 7 bolts and disconnnect the linkage..<br />leave lots of room as the linkage is the same length basically as the driveshaft. the rest is simple, if you've done it before. but you have to remove the muffler and it would also be easier if the fuel pump comes off and really easy if you remove the starter.<br />been there, done that, many times..<br />Inohv8
