I have a 1973 65 hp Evinrude Triumph and it will turn over but it won't fire up. It was running fine the last time I tried to crank it. I dont know much about outboard motors, can anyone help me with some troubleshooting steps so I can narrow down the problem?

smashhead, i would start by pulling the plugs. after all that cranking they should show wether or not you're getting fuel. while the plugs are out; clamp them (1 at atime ) to a ground with the plug wire on and spin the engine to see if you're getting spark. that takes care of fuel and ignition checks. if it ran good last time out then i'm assuming you have decent compression.

Grounding the spark plugs will tell you nothing. You need an open air gap spark tester set at 7/16 " .

Is the choke knob set on the "Automatic" position? Do you have the warm-up lever raised? Are you holding the choke switch lever up while cranking it? Is the starter cranking it over pretty briskly? It won't start if cranking too slow.

Check the spark at 7/16" gap with the plugs in. If no spark, try it with the plugs out. If it now has spark, it is cranking too slowly. OR the ignition charge coils are shot (pretty common for the '73 motors). Look in the area under the flywheel for soft, leaky, or melted coils (the 3 big ones).

If you have no spark, find the black/yellow wire on the pulse pack and disconnect it. No spark, mtr prob. Spark, boat prob.
