Hello,

I am attempting to replace the impeller on a 1973 Johnson 40hp. I need to disconnect the shift lever but from what I can tell, the coupler is inside the exhaust housing and not on the front of the motor like other Johnsons.... Can anyone help with this? Do I need to lift the powerhed off to get to the coupler?

Thanks

Look on the side of the exhaust hsg and you'll see a little cover held in by 2 screws. Remove that and you'll see the shift link coupler. Remove the bottom screw and the linkage should disconnect. Go to shop.evinrude.com , look up your mtr in the parts diagrams and you'll get a better idea.

When you put the g/c back up and attach the shift rod to the connector make sure you align the bolt hole in the connector with the indent in the shift rod.
