How do I test the driver coil. I have an Ohm meter. Thanks

1976 resistance specs are 1.45 +/-0.4 ohms on rope start models. Sorry. I don't have the 1974 spec which may or not be the same.

Try running it in the dark or a dark area, and check for leakage in the plug wires. If you got a jolt, that might be a reason. An easy fix is to replace the plug wires (7mm solid core. I can buy it by the foot at the local NAPA store. It's cheap.). Also, clean any rust or corrosion from the spring inside the plug boot -- could be the source of the bad connection. You don't have to disassemble -- just ream it out a little with a Phillips screwdriver and see if that makes a difference.

A lot of questions/answers about older small OMC outboards, can be found by reading the info found at the following,

OMC outboard related articles

He has done a lot of work on the older OMC motors, and The info of how to set the points and carb using a ohm meter is the best way of getting them set so the timing is dead on for both cylinders. It can make a world of difference when one wants a smooth running motor. JMO
