Starting a post hoping to ask a allot of questions and get some support in putting this 72ish? Chieftain back together, Found this new years 2015, Took my mom to look at it over Christmas, I'm forty something years old, but still mom's knows when you have found something you just knew was priceless, like when you were were a kid, and as moms do just completely insisted in buying it for me, total seven hundred dollars "Trust me I was not going to let this thing pass" Well we [brother enlisted] have got some to work to do. Will try to keep up with the progress.

Well done on the purchase and congrats. Good luck with your resto. She will make a fine big water rig when done.

Hey Smevil welcome to channel tin all tin all the time!

Well now what do we have here, a nice IO Chief! A 21 or 22'r with either a 4 or 6 cylinder mercruiser? Thanks for the pics but I can see you're going to need a photobucket account so you can drop some bigger and better pics in the posts. The guys here are greedy for lots of pics and bigger the better. :encouragement:

Looking forward to seeing the old gal brought back to her former glory, well except for the avocado colors

OK I got that part down, thanks guys hoping you were going to get involved, even before I found the boat I had already checked out each one of your posts and I mean page by page. So as you can tell got her home and tore right into it. Was hoping to find some kinda data tag in the clean out but only able to find a number etched into transom MCZ0608209 it seems pretty official its 2ft long and carved in with a pocket knife. So not allot to go on got good numbers of the motor, Mercruiser 140, with the pre-alpha drive with 21 pitch prop? as far as age and length, just a study of old brochures leans to '72 and 21.8 ft on the tape measure.
As far as a full restoration? I'm probably not as cool as you guys, you guys were basically all in. But none the less still going getting motor online, pull apart, clean, grind and reseal any water leak in cabin, walls, floors, seating, wiring, going back in with a bed/camp setup in front and hang out in back (I got girls) Oh I forgot I already found a old guy on my way to work that had boat service for years, back years ago. he let into his woods that once was once a busy boat yard, but now just easier to hold on to the branches an jump boat to boat to stay out of the brush and stickers bushes. Stayed for a little while, turned out was 2 hours late for work. already located old school gauges, all the old teak stuff you could dream of. So with a little help from his old service shop I feel pretty good about getting this old boat back together hopefully even better than when it was new, with a few mods and upgrades, and a whole lot of scrubbing, grinding, cleaning, cursing, laughing and a couple beers to celebrate the small accomplishments. Thanks again.

Looked this up at the USCG MIC site:
[h=2]MICHIGAN HOMEMADE BOATS[/h]
MIC:MCZ Status:Federal or State Agency
Company:MICHIGAN HOMEMADE BOATS Company Official:,
Parent Company: Parent MIC:
Address:MIC FOR STATE ISSUED HINS City:
State:MI Zip:
Country: Phone:5173731230
Fax: In Business:
Out of Business: Date Modified:
Type:Miscellaneous
Addtional Address:
Comments:

Since it's listed as a 1972, that pre-dates actual HINs (boat hull VINs), so at some point, an owner registered and titled it after 1972/3 (when HINs became mandatory).

The 1st 3 letters of your #, MCZ, corresponds to a Michigan issued HIN, and like many states, for record keeping, they refer to them as Homemade Boats, although it clearly isnt. Just details really and FYI....

Looks like a nice rig to tear into, for sure eliminate the pedestals under those back to back seats. Looks like some of the pedestal might be out of pressure treated lumber, can't get that stuff out soon enough.

Watermann's Chieftain rehab will be a great resource as are many of the tin SC Topics.

Good luck

After reviewing you pics in photobucket I would be leaning more to your rig being a 1967. https://www.flickr.com/photos/starcraftbrochures/3879729764/in/set-72157622210184948

1967:
Rear mounted navigation light
No bow hatch
Sink and counter mounted at front windshield, sink drain exiting front starboard side of hull
Enclosed forward bow

1972:
Anchor/navigation light mounted on top windshield
Air scoop vents on stern for engine and mid ship for fuel tanks
Bow hatch
Sink drain line mid ship on port side

What do ya think?

Ya, I can see that, definitely with the rounded vents fwd and aft in center, looking at "72 got two vents on rear. I didn't know this linked to the Photobucket, so I will put more pictures up there, hope you enjoy. If you catch anything else let me know.

Some good pics of the Chief they sure are photogenic boats! :D

Looks like you got her on the water for a run too. We're kind of lazy about seeking out pics and it's way easier to comment on them linked here. Like this...

Wow she has aged really well and is still pretty darn good shape. I keep expecting to see rotten this mulched that but everything looks pretty solid from here.

Awesome boat, smevil! That camper cover really did you a big favor in keeping all that wood dry. Plus you've got a heatable, dry work space for the interior work. Good luck!
