ok so i finally got some time cleared up and money saved to begin my first figerglass boat rebuild. this weekend we gutted the entire boat and we were greeted with about 1000 lbs of ice, water and wood that had rotted right through. a lucky surprise is that the stringers seem to have been redone already and are completely solid. after reading many posts on here i expected to see three 3/4 inch playwood stringers when torn up but it had a ladder type frame in it just glassed to the floor on the edges but not even touching the bottom of the boat in the middle. this seems good for water passage but does that make much diffrence structurally? cant wait to hear everyones input!

hi ....welcome to iboats fellow canuck.....

as far as the stringers....well, you can build them like that
it is strong, but it is also unnecessary weight.

the other thing is that the stringers need to be glassed in.
glassing in the stringers will add the rot proof, and the structural integrity you will need.
just glassing in the few inches of contact of the stringers will hold. but if the hull suffers twist, or flex, the chances are great of a hull / stringer separation.

click the link in my sig for pics on how to glass the stringers in. as well it will tell you what kind of materials to use on the stringers.

as far as the deck goes...

this link is a how to on deck replacement with every thing you need to know.

Ayuh,.... Don't look like they drain very well either,...

As ya design yer new lay-out for yer stringers,... Think Drainage....

Water will get under the deck, no way 'round it...
Plan for Drainage, so ya can pump it outa the bilge pit...

i have already planned to put a bilge in the last section of the stringer at the back and use ridged foam insulation in the rest leaving room at the bottom for drainage. thanks thho alway appreciate other peoples idea and input :D

one more question , has anyone ever tried to frame the decks(not bottom deck but a casting platform like on a bass boat) on a boat with pvc? would this break in the cold or while hitting large waves? i ask only because it seams like an easy light way to frame something.

Ayuh,.... CDX....sheathing.... covered in glass, 'n resin of course...

'n wood framing is stronger, without any more weight...
Pvc is a Bad idea...

i am def going to fiberglass and resin the floor, but i would like to just resin the deck and then put on a roll on grip bedliner paint for a finish instead of glass, im told it is completely water proof and would seal and be a good finish product. do see foresee this to be a problem?

I have heard mixed reviews on the bed liner products, but think if you keep it to the deck only, and do not apply to any the hull it should work OK, if you ever find the need to tear out and redo, that bed liner is supposedly an awful mess to clean up. maybe mask off the edges and keep a clean 2" line of painted fiberglass around the edge of deck and then do a matching liner color on the rest

Ayuh,... Unsupported resin will just crack, 'n blister...
It needs Cms, 'n/ or cloth to support it...

Re: 1972 Signa Echo-teardown and rebuild

I read the thread on how to put in the floor and it recommends using 2 layers of 1 1/2 oz csm and 1 layer off 6 oz woven cloth, can i do just one layer of csm? the 10 yrd one just wont cover twice and i cant really afford 2.
