Thank you all in advance, what an amazing forum.
I just bought a 1972 18' Sea Ray and Im trying to I.D. the engine. Its an in line 6 cylinder with an engine block #366853, and the letters GM stamped below the numbers. If it is a 250, can I use a truck engine? Or are there other 6 cylinders that will bolt up to the outdrive without any major modifications?
Thanks again,
Lance

First off - welcome aboard.

yes, its most likely the 250 GM rated at 165hp. you can use a truck motor, just put in brass core plugs and a marine head gasket (or a good composite gasket). the cam in your motor is a bit different than the truck. I personally would stick to a marine cam, however many simply bolt in the truck motors and go.

Finding a good running low mileage 250 may be difficult, these days. It is a 40 year old motor. you may be further ahead to have yours rebuilt.

just make sure the motor has the "ear" for the front motor mount. just any old engine wont work.

Thank you Commander, thank you Admiral. I am registering at "inliners" to confirm the casting #. Do you know if a 292 in line six will bolt up?

the 292 will have the same flywheel housing, however has a weird 292 only right side mount. it can be done, however your going to have to fabricate something. if your going that far, you would be better off finding a complete marinized 4.3 and be done with it.

the 196/230/250 motors are in the same family. they all share the same flywheel housing pattern as the V6 and V8's. the 292 is similar to the 250, other than the right hand mount that I mentioned.

my recommendations is to do a google search for castings vs joining a forum unless you plan on contributing more than your first question. you can join inlinners or stovebolt if you want for a bunch of automotive related posts.
