I just bought an 18' Starcraft with a model# 85ESL 85hp Johnson outboard, 1972. It has sat for the last 5 years. Any sugestions on what to do before I try turning it over? I plan to squirt some oil in the cylenders. Also I have been told the water pump impeller is plastic and can stick and break. Should that be changed and how big a job is it. Any thing else besides draining gas.

Hi,Dave. Welcome to iboats, new guy :)

Adminn5, the webmiester here, has provided a nifty link that will answer all questions relative to whippin a motor back into shape. He did this because the question is the most common one asked. Of course, if it does not answer them,or if you need "fills", by all means, postum. The guys here can and will give you great advice. http://www.boatmotors.com/engine_maintenance.html

And yes, the impeller will form a shape after sitting idle for that length of time in one spot. These impeller's housing is not exactly circular, they are concentric. The rubber also will harden over time. This means that when you crank it up the first time, it'll pump water just fine....Until you are about 5 miles from the ramp, and then it desintigrates.

My last boat had twin 72 100 hp. Johnsons
that sat outside without being started for 12 years and they both fired up
with very little effort. Just shot a little
oil in the cylinders and turned them by hand
before starting. I did change the impellers
after I took the boat out a few times because
it was recommended, but they were still in great shape. They are thicker rubber than
some others I have seen but its always safer
to change them. Also, change the lower unit fluid. The 72's are Hydro Electric shift and need to use (OMC Premium Blend gear lube).
Good luck
