I have a 1972 Johnson 65 Hp short shaft outboard and need to convert to a long shaft outboard. How long is the exhaust housing? I've found one on Ebay but it doesn't look different than mine. They claim it is for a long shaft outboard but it measures 17" long. Is this a long shaft housing? The drive shaft for a long shaft is 30 1/2" roughly. Thanks.

You should be able to measure it without taking anything apart.

Just looking at your first post, seems the short shaft is 17" long. That would be for model: 65ES72s. I would think that a long shaft would be some 5" longer, or 22". Model 65ESL72s. (the "L" indicates long shaft) Does not appear that OMC made that model with an Extra Long (XL) shaft that year, which would be some 5" longer still, or about 27". 65ESXL72S is not a valid model number.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your motor. If you look at the exhaust housings you'll see two different part #'s. These are what you want to measure on your motor and the housing you want to buy. One size is std and other is long.
