I've got a '72 Johnson 100hp electric shift engine on a '72 Glastron V176. Since I got it, it has always run fine. However, at the end of last year I was trying to pull someone on a tube and every time I gave it throttle with the tuber hooked up it would die. Someone suggested maybe it is the timing. I'm a novice and don't pretend to know much about timing other than the basics. Does anyone have any thoughts about this diagnosis being right and/or how to adjust timing on this engine?

Timing doesn't change by itself.
However, on a related subject, the timer base may be sticking. Fairly common.

If the timer base may be sticking, what is the best way to free it up?

When I get home today I am going to do more investigating about how the timer base moves as I increase throttle. I am thinking I may have some dried grease.

one other question I have - is there any reason on this engine to use anything but the manufacturer recommended spark plugs?

Motor came with L76V surface gap plugs. You won't find many people that love those. Most use the optional plug QL77JC4
