I was recently given a 17 foot center console boat with a 1972 evinrude 100 h.p. electric shift. The outboard has had a new pump, thermastats, and all gaskets and seals replaced. The problem I'm having is that it will always run hot and sound the overheat alarm. The only time it runs for more than 5 minutes without the alarm sounding is when I use the flush kit. I was wondering if anyone may have any idea about what to check/replace to try to cure this problem. I'm new to boating and outboard repair so any help would be great!

One other thing...I guess that the two holes on the back of the outboard (about 12" above the prop) are water outlets. If they are... I never have seen any water coming out of them no matter if I use the flush adapter or not. I have a Raytek laser temp gauge and in the lake the engine get to about 200 degrees in less than 5 min. When hooked up to a flush kit it never gets over 115. Someone help me please!

Sounds like your water pump isn't pumping.

Here's how to check. Find the two cooling hoses, one leading from each head to the thermostat housing. Disconnect one of the hoses & start the motor in the lake (not on the flush kit). You should get flow from the hose, & the motor should run cool. What this does is bypass the thermostat, so that all flow from the pump is cool water.

michael - If you paid someone to do the water pump & t-stats you need to take it back & have them fix it. If you did it yourself & don't have a shop manual I urge you to get one and go back through what you did. Either way either the pump or the t-stats or both are not working properly.
